London Skyline Policy

The London Branch of the UK Landscape Institute organised three lecture series on ‘rooftop London’, in 2021, 2020 and 2013. There are links to the videos below, with lecturers Hal Moggridge, Robert Holden, Benz Kotzen and Tom Turner

The lecturers were invited to produce a policy on London Skyline Policy, which is available for free download by clicking the link below

There has been debate about London views and London skylines since it began to be affected by high buildings in the twentieth century. This is good. But the focus has been too much on individual tall  buildings and narrow views. From the perspective of landscape architecture what matters is:

  • the conservation of high quality urban landscapes
  • the improvement of low quality urban landscapes
  • the composition of individual buildings with each other and with landscape features to make a great city

The background to the Policy is discussed and reviewed in this video.
